Partner Spotlight: Yanira Rodriguez from Pathways to Graduation

What do you enjoy most about being an educator?

As an educator,  I enjoy sharing knowledge on a daily basis with my students.     Also, it is with great pleasure I help my students build confidence within themselves as part of the process in learning English as a New Language.

What was your favorite school subject growing up?

My favorite school subject growing up was English Language Arts.  I loved reading and writing on a daily basis.  I enjoyed it so much that I happily helped my classmates and the teacher appreciated me for that.

What influenced you most to become a teacher?

My career in education was a surprise for me as well for my family.  I never thought of being a teacher.

— Yanira Rodriguez

My first career is Hospitality Management and I decided to teach in the year 2000 after a good friend talked to me about a career in teaching.  I became super excited as I listened to her passion for teaching.  She was a great influence in my decision making process as well as my intuition to follow my heart.

Now, I’ve been teaching for 16 years and each teaching day is completely different from the prior day.  I learn more and more from my students, and they learn from me.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

The best piece of advice was given to me by my lovely mother.  She would always say to me,  “Work hard, because when you do, positive things will happen to you and your dreams will become a reality.”

What is your favorite way to relieve stress?

My favorite stress relief is taking care of my body and soul.  I discovered a great massage spa in my neighborhood.  So, when I feel tense and stressed I treat myself to a one hour body massage or a one hour reflexology massage.

What’s one activity/hobby/ritual you do regularly to support your own emotional well-being?

I start and end each day doing something positive for myself.  When I wake up, I listen to light music as I prepare my favorite tea.  At the end of the day, I ensure to prioritize self-care by doing something for me such as getting my favorite tea at Starbucks, getting my nails done, getting my hair done, getting a massage, going for a walk, or shopping.

This helps me to love myself first before I take care of others or love anyone else.

What do you like most about partnering with Move This World to practice emotional management with your classroom each day?
