SEL Questions & Discussion Prompts to Support Reading

One of the best things you can encourage your student to do while home during school closures is to read! There are books available online if it’s difficult for students to access books at home. Adults play a critical role in supporting reading at home, providing an opportunity to reinforce literacy skills and social emotional learning.

No matter what book students are reading, adults can help them reflect on skills like self-awareness and relationship building by asking them to analyze characters’ behavior, empathize with characters and relate situations to their own life.

In this resource, you’ll find discussion questions that support all five SEL competencies, as outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). Share it with families or use the SEL questions for students journal prompts.
